ALFA magazine article looks at senior care facilities A few years ago, much of the excitement in senior living design was about anticipating the baby boomers. It was predicted that the seniors would demand more choice for maximum social and physical activity. However, Boomers are entering senior living later than previous cohorts. The Boomers are not expected to be in independent living until 2020. Presently, the an individual entering assisted living is in their late 80's or early 90's. Funding availability and an emphasis on assisted living and memory care are affecting design now. But the changes are less about aesthetics and more about utilization of space. The demand is to be outdoors. Operators of senior living homes are looking at villages at the bottom of ski slopes and other locations.
