Golden Boomers Concept of Aging in Place
Given all of the research showing that Boomers want to age in place at home, you may be surprised to know that Boomers do not necessarily want to live in the home they are in today. Millions of people in this massive generation, especially the “Golden Boomers” who are retiring from careers, are open to the idea of selling their homes and moving to different places.
According to a 2012 Gallup study, Boomers expect to retire at the average age of 67. A 2012 DC Bureau of Labor Statistics report states that long distance relocations were uncommon following full-time career employment immediately following retirement; however for people who took “bridge jobs” following retirement, long distance relocation actually increased. Golden Boomers may choose to retire to what has been their vacation home across country or they may even move outside the U.S. As members of the first generation to grow up in the jet age, Golden Boomers are well-traveled. During their university years, many Boomers ventured abroad, hiking around Europe or Australia, biking across Brazil, backpacking through Scandinavia, pub-crawling in Ireland.Once settled into a profession, these Golden Boomers continued to travel with spouses, children and grandchildren. Renting a home in Tuscany for a couple of weeks in the summer, visiting Bali for a month in winter or working abroad for a year is commonplace in the Golden Boomer experience. It’s no wonder they are choosing to move to other countries.
In the blink of an eye, millions of adventurous Boomers could be outsourcing their retirement to less-expensive but high quality living in another country, from Costa Rica to New Zealand to Canada. When they are not working and don’t feel tied to being close to grandchildren, they will make decisions to move to a milder climate where their dollars last longer.
When the time comes for outside caregiver support, Golden Boomers may age in place from that point until death. They may also choose Assisted Living or a hybrid kind of living opportunity that evolves between now and then.
